1. Welcome & first checks
1.1 Inspect packaging (why it matters)
When you first receive your Trezor, check packaging and device for tamper evidence. If anything looks altered, stop and contact support. Authentic devices arrive without preinstalled firmware — the setup flow installs firmware securely through Trezor Suite.
1.2 Prepare before you start
Use a trusted computer, never a public or unknown machine. Have a pen and the supplied recovery card or a secure paper backup ready — avoid digital photos or clipboard copies for seed words.
2. Install Trezor Suite & start
2.1 Download the app or use the web flow
Download Trezor Suite
(desktop recommended) or continue in browser. Launch the app, choose “Set up my Trezor,” and follow on-screen prompts. The Suite guides firmware installation and wallet creation.
Step A — Connect your device
Connect the Trezor via USB. The Suite will detect the device and either install firmware or direct you to install the latest official firmware. Never install firmware from third-party sites.
Step B — Install firmware
Confirm the on-device prompts to install firmware. The Suite shows progress; do not disconnect until complete. Firmware updates are routine and protect you from known vulnerabilities.
3. Create wallet & backup
3.1 Generate PIN and recovery seed
Set a PIN on the device to protect local access. The device will generate a recovery seed (12/24 words). Write the words in order, double-check spelling, and store them offline in a secure place.
3.2 Recovery seed best practices
- Never store seed words on a computer, phone, cloud, or photo.
- Consider multiple geographically separated paper copies.
- Use metal backup plates for fire/water resistance if you need long-term durability.
4. Security, firmware & maintenance
4.1 Keep firmware updated
Keep your device firmware and Suite app up-to-date. The Suite notifies you of updates and performs safe installations.
4.2 Learn common threats
Phishing websites and fake installers are common threats. Always use official trezor.io pages and verify URLs. Trezor will never ask for your seed words—any request to reveal them is malicious.
5. Advanced options & troubleshooting
5.1 Device-specific guides
Follow model-specific setup guides (Model One, Model T, Safe series) to ensure correct initialization and optional features configuration.
5.2 If something goes wrong
Contact official Trezor support. For suspected tampering, stop using the device and request guidance from official channels.
Closing
Setting up your Trezor correctly — firmware install, seed backup, PIN — takes about 10–20 minutes. This small time investment secures your crypto for years. Keep your recovery seed offline and treat it as the single point of recovery for your funds.
